NEWS | Farewell, InstantMandarin

InstantMandarin.com, the small, scrappy language learning school based in Chengdu, China, announced that they will cease operations at the end of 2024. Customers with lesson balances are advised to use up their remaining lessons by the end of 2024.

A bombshell, not entirely unexpected: InstantMandarin.com sent us this message late tonight advising that they will cease operations as of the end of 2024. The writing has kind-of sort-of been on the wall for awhile now, with the company first reducing its lesson packages from 180 lessons to 10. Today I noticed that they didn’t have any lesson packages for sale, which greatly concerned me. The announcement this evening is the explanation.

I still have more than 100 lessons tied up as credit with IM, but my reaction is only one of sadness. More than any other provider, InstantMandarin taught my older son 方平山 to fluidly read Chinese Hanzi better than he can read English, and they have worked daily with my younger son to get him over the literacy hump. I am profoundly grateful for the efforts of all of IM’s teaching staff.

If you have InstantMandarin credit, recommend you burn it up while the company is still around in some form. IM had and has some truly exemplary teachers and I will be doing my best to track them down so we can continue to learn and grow.
